Doctor Who Columbus is a group for Ohio fans of the popular show from British television, Doctor Who. We have monthly get-togethers in the Columbus area to socialize and discuss Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures and other favorites of science fiction!
Join us for exchanging opinions, sharing ideas and appreciation of Doctor Who in a fun, friendly atmosphere without the bureaucracy.
We've planned two social events this month, first we are attending Origins Game Fair, a gaming convention held at the Columbus Convention Center on High Street, on Saturday June 27th, as an all day event. A meetup at 11am near Registration, by the long escalator is planned. Tickets run $35 a person for full game access, Fair tickets to see exhibits, etc and hall games, $3 a person, $10 for a family.
Next on Sunday 28th we are doing a Morning Movie and Lunch at AMC Lennox theater - most movies run $5 before noon, except IMAX. Looks like the poll winner is Transformers, 10:30am Lennox, meet up at 1pm at Johnny Rockets. A few of us will be going to the runner up, Night at the Musuem 10:25am, hitting the Barnes and Noble Bookstore after, then meeting at 1pm at Johnny Rockets. Pay attention to the mailing list to see results as we iron out the details.
Our next steering meeting is July 9th, Thursday, at 7pm (Delayed a week because of the 4th of July holiday). Currently we are planning to meet at Tai's Asian Bistro, at the eastern end of the Fiesta Plaza on Lane Ave, using the outside tables if the weather is good - one block east of Tommy's, at North Star and Lane Ave, but keep an eye out for changes. We'll review convention plans for 2010, and plan our next few meetings, including a social meeting on the 3rd Saturday in July, 5pm. If you are interested in hosting the party or have a suggestion please post to the mailing list or show up at the steering meeting with your ideas.
We were at Marcon Memorial weekend. We ran the video room 24/7, garnered some interest in our club, and even got a new member or two to join up! With the British Invasion theme, we tried to take on a bit more this year, helping out where we could and participating as much as possible. We'll continue to run the video room next year, but will probably play a smaller part in the over all convention as the theme will be Necropolis, City of the Dead - and our show is very much alive
We had a social meeting Saturday, May 16th, at Sara and Carlton's house in Grove City. Our last meeting before the con, we relaxed a bit, and previewed some of the vids chosen for the video room- and did a little go-cart racing in a neighbor’s new machine.
Our last meeting/ Midnight movie date was Thursday May 14th 2009, 8pm at Tai's Asian Bistro in the Fiesta Plaza on Lane Avenue, between Kenny Rd and North Star Rd. (Movie premiere was be Angels&Demons)Per Andrew's suggestion, we had a few of these meetings&movies this month to iron things out for our participation in the Marcon convention in a few weeks. We've continued to iron out video room schedule, and other ideas on how to help out at Marcon, and set up some future social events for after the convention. Come to the next one if you are interested in deciding what, where, and when, our club will be doing! Note the later time of 8pm for these was because following the meeting, at midnight, we met down at the AMC Lennox theater to see a new movie premier.
Saturday, May 9, 2009 we attended an IMAX screening of the new Star Trek movie at the Crosswoods Ultrascreen Cinema - Columbus, located at 200 Hutchinson Avenue, Columbus OH, 43235. 4pm showing. ($8 adults, $7.50 for Seniors/Children.)
Our May steering meeting was on May 7th, 2009 8pm at the Tommy's Pizza at Lane Avenue and North Star Lane but we have been talking about trying different areas. April 30th's steering meeting we ended with a midnight movie, we saw Xmen's latest movie - it was pretty good this time around! Looking forward to seeing some more good sci-fi this month!
Our April steering meeting was April 2nd, Thursday 7pm We actually got a good start on our video list for Marcon and ideas for music video contest for next year -Andrew masterminded the rest and it's now complete!
Our March our Social Meeting was held at Saturday the 28th at Andrew's house, thanks for having us there! We previewed a few choices for our video room at Marcon, the list to be worked on further at steering meeting. On Tuesday the 10th and Wednesday the 18th, we attended a game with the Blue Jackets - what has hockey got to do with Doctor Who? We're not sure - but the tickets were FREE and the games were fun!
Our January social meeting was held on Saturday January 17th, 2009 at John's house, (thanks again!). We had a good time watching new shows from the UK, as well as reviewing Matt Smith's performance with Billie Piper in the Sally Lockhart Mysteries. We did manage to conduct a little club business, collecting forms and fees for the staff membership of Marcon 44: British Invasion, for our part running the videos.
Our Winter field trip was to Who North America - on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009. See our field trip page for more info on fun to be had there!
